GitTogether | The Side of Open Source You Neglect Most -- That You Shouldn't Be | Tapas Adhikary

A recent survey shows that only 17% of Open Source projects see the light of success. It means, most of the Open Source projects are not successful. What could be the reasons?

This talk will dive into factors that Open Source Project Maintainers and Contributors tend to neglect which they shouldn't be. We will learn from practical examples of dealing with projects in the past where the same success could be repeated to keep another project successful or to build communities around it to keep it vibrant.
We will also learn about projects where it was not the case and how it could have been handled differently.
The talk will include Getting into open source, contributions, maintenance, success factors, failures, and communities.
I would also like to conclude the talk with two Open Source projects that I am involved with as Maintainers, ReactPlay and hashnode-client.

🔑key takeaways are:-

  • What is Open Source
  • How to get started as a Contributor
  • How to get started as a Maintainer
  • The Success Factor
  • Overcoming the continuous failure pattern
  • How to build a vibrant community around it and sustain
  • A case study of two Open Source projects of different natures.
